The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation dedicated to achieving extraordinary improvements in human and animal health.
We support the brightest minds in biomedical research and the medical humanities, focusing on five strategic challenges: genetics, the brain, infectious disease, chronic disease and ageing and the relationship between the environment, nutrition and health. Our breadth of support includes public engagement, education and the application of research to improve health.
To maximise the impact of our research spend, we require all research papers that arise from our funding to be made freely available as soon as possible, and in any event within six months of the publication date.
We provide funding to our grantholders to cover open access publications costs, and when this funding is used, research papers must be made available without embargo and licenced using the Creative Commons, Attribution licence (CC-BY). We believe that the full research and economic benefit of published content will only be realised when there are no restrictions on access to, and reuse of, this information.
We are supporting the ASAP programme as we believe it will provide demonstrable examples of how Open Access has benefited both science and society.
The Wellcome Trust is independent of both political and commercial interests.
